The Dwelling Project

The Dwelling is a deep playa art installation. From the outside, The Dwelling is a 7 foot tall shiny metallic gem, half buried in the playa. Its surface is metal, shimmering orange and green. At night, the edges of the gem glow in pulses of color. It also seems to be a ship or vehicle of some kind, that travels in ways we do not comprehend.

The inside is a foreign and strange place. It looks like someone lives here, but everything looks uncomfortable and unfamiliar. The structure has many hidden and mysterious interactions to it. For example, some of the music will be at the higher limits of human hearing, so younger people, but not older people, will be able to hear it. There is a resin cube, filled with LEDs. To a casual observer, it is inert and uninteresting. But that is because it is outside our visible spectrum, displaying symbols and messages in infrared light. When someone raises their camera to take a picture of a beautiful bauble next to it, they will be able to see that the cube is actually a mysterious and complex display (digital cameras see/display infrared). Similarly, one wall inside has a flat, black panel to the visible eye, but in the infrared one can see writing in a strange language.
